Sun protectionSun protection is simply guarding yourself and others from the adverse effects of sunlight. People who work or play outdoors and overexpose themselves to the sun will develop wrinkled, freckled dry skin and eventually skin cancers. People who vacation at the shore, or lay out on weekends will risk melanoma. Sun damage in childhood is one of the most important causes of skin cancer in adults. According to scientists, 50 to 80 percent of your lifetime sun exposure to UV rays occurs by the age of 18 to 20 years old. Therefore it is important for young people to protect themselves from sun overexposure. There are lots of good sunscreens available for kids, including formulations for sensitive skin, brands with fun scents like watermelon, long-lasting waterproof and sweat-proof versions, and easy-application varieties in spray bottles. Sun protection is an important part of occupational health and safety as the risk of outdoor workers suffering sun-related injury is high. Sun Protection TipsDon't forget to apply sunscreen to your lips and ears. UV reflection from sand, water, pavement, cement and snow doubles the amount of ultraviolet exposure. Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going outdoors and reapply every two hours, especially during exercise or swimming. Wear a hat to protect your face, scalp, ears and neck. Protect children by limiting their sun exposure and applying sunscreen to children 6 months and older. Wear a sunscreen with a minimum of 15 SPF, even on cloudy days. Stick balms are great for lips and ears. These can also be used around the eyes to avoid stinging.
