Tooth whitening

Tooth whitening is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the color of natural tooth enamel and is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile. It can be a highly effective way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth without removing any of the tooth surface. Tooth whitening cannot make a complete colour change; but it will lighten the existing shade. Whitening of teeth can be done by Bleaching or by the use of Veneers.Bleaching is done by the use of a chemical which is appplied on the surface of the teeth. Teeth whitening is ideal for people who have healthy, unrestored teeth and gums. Individuals with yellow tones to their teeth respond best. But this cosmetic procedure is not recommended for everyone. Regular toothbrushing, stopping smoking and cutting down on strongly coloured food and drink will help stop stains returning. There are a number of different products available to bleach teeth.

If your teeth are extremely sensitive to hot and cold food or drinks, bleaching may not be recommended. The effects of whitening can last up to three years. However, this will vary from person to person. The effect is less likely to last as long if you smoke, or eat or drink products that can stain your teeth. There is no evidence to suggest that tooth bleaching is harmful to the gums, but it isn't clear what the long-term effect on the nerves and blood vessels inside the teeth are. Potential side-effects include sensitivity of the teeth to hot and cold, a sore throat, tender gums and white patches on the gums. Other types of stains can be caused by antibiotics, such as tetracycline; or too much fluoride. There are several whitening toothpastes on the market. Although they do not affect the natural colour of your teeth, they may be effective at removing staining and therefore may improve the overall appearance of your teeth.
