Sensitive Skin

What is a Sensitive Skin ?

Nearly everybody experiences the odd allergic reaction at some point, but truly sensitive skin is quite rare. If you are unlucky enough to have the kind of complexion that flares up frequently, treat it as if it were dry: avoid harsh products that contain alcohol or surfactants (detergents used in certain cleansers and soaps), and choose products that are not highly scented.

Beware the 'fragrance-free' label, however, as often this means that yet more chemicals are included to mask an otherwise noticeable scent. There are a number of symptoms which may help you to identify whether or not you have sensitive skin (should you be in any doubt):

  • Your skin reacts quickly to both heat and cold; Sensitive skin burns easily, when exposed to wind or sun
  • Skin is easily irritated by detergents, cosmetics and alcohol, leaving the skin red and blotchy, with visible surface veins.

Sensitive Skin Remedies and Tips

Although the concept of natural ingredients is an attractive one, remember that sensitive skin can often react violently to products with live plant extracts. Instead, look for products that are labelled 'hypoallergenic' (although you would be wise to check the contents just in case), especially ones that contain skin soothers such as kaolin, camomile and aloe. Sufferers of sensitive skin do not have to go without make-up or skin care products. On the contrary, a good quality natural skin care regime will help to reduce the sensitivity over time and will promote healthy, vibrant looking skin.

These days even make-up is packaged with extensive ingredients lists - check your cosmetics in the same way you check your skincare, and you will minimize unpleasant reactions. Avoid the sun entirely or protect yourself with a high-factor chemical sunscreen such as titanium dioxide. Use milk to cleanse and moisturize with a solution of rose water and glycerine if no lotion or cream suits the skin. The perfumes and strong scented creams and lotion must be avoided for sensitive skin. Use of primrose oil and moisturizer should be used for this kind of skin as it hydrates and protects the skin.

Some more tips for caring sensitive skin :

  • Use your natural skin care regime every single day.
  • Ensure your diet is very high in nuts, grains and vegetables and very low in saturated fatty foods.
  • Drink plenty of water each and every day to help keep your skin hydrated.
  • Use a moisturiser designed specifically for dry and sensitive skin.
  • Use a toner that is appropriate for oily skin.
