What is Aphthous Ulcers ?

Apthous Ulcers differ from cold sores in that they happen on the internal soft tissues of your mouth and aren't infectious. In addition, cold sores are caused by a form of the herpes virus, making them exceedingly contagious. They can can occur at any age, but often they first appear when you are between 10 and 40 years of age. Pain usually decreases after many days, and envenom sores typically heal within one to three weeks. Occasionally envenom sores can develop that are larger than 1 centimeter in diameter or last longer than two weeks.

Aphthous Ulcers is a very common type of skin disorders but is very dangerous also. Aphthous ulcers are single or multiple ulcers of the inside of the mouth that tend to revert. Aphthous ulcers are sometimes caused by Vitamin-B deficiency. The ulcers usually last one to two weeks.

What are the symptoms of Aphthous Ulcers ?

Here are the list of some of the common symptoms of Aphthous Ulcers :

  • Painful sore or sores in your mouth — on your tongue, underneth your tongue (soft palate), inside your cheeks or lips, and at the base of your gums
  • Tingling or burning sensation prior to appearance of the sores
  • Round, white sores with a red edge or halo
  • white or yellow oval with an inflamed red border
  • Aphthous ulcers usually start with a tingling or burning sensation at the site of the future mouth ulcer

You also may experience the following signs or symptoms, although they may not be associated to the canker sores:

  • Fever
  • Listlessness
  • Swollen lymph node

What are the causes of Aphthous Ulcers ?

The exact cause of aphthous ulcers is unknown yet there might be some causes like :

  • In most cases, the ulcers develop for no apparent reason in people who are healthy.
  • In some cases, the ulcers are related to other factors or diseases. These include:
    • Faulty immune system function
    • Variations in hormone levels. Some women find that mouth ulcers arise just before their period. In some women, the ulcers only develop after the menopause.
    • Some ex-smokers find they develop ulcers only after stopping smoking.
    • Nutritional problems, such as a deficiency of vitamin B-12, zinc, folic acid or iron
    • Rarely, a food allergy may be the cause.
    • Mouth ulcers run in some families. So, a genetic factor may play a role in some cases.
    • stress or tissue injury may cause the eruption of canker sores
    • A reaction to a medication is a rare cause. For example, Nicorandil, anti-inflammatory drugs, and oral nicotine surrogate therapy have been reported to cause mouth ulcers in some people.
    • Mouth ulcers are more familiar in people with Crohn's disease, coeliac disease, HIV infection, and Bechet's disease. But the ulcers may not be aphthous type.
