Keloids - Info on Keloids Symptom, Causes & TreatmentWhat is Keloids ?Keloids is a very common type of skin disorders but is very dangerous also. A keloid is a greatly expatiated scar that projects above the skin surface. The skin heals by formation of scar tissue, which at first is often red and somewhat preeminent. Keloids occur more frequently in dark-skinned people. Keloids are an overgrowth of scar tissue at the site of a healed skin injury. A scar is made up of 'connective tissue', gristle-like fibers accumulated in the skin by the fibroblasts to hold the wound closed. With keloids, the fibroblasts continue to multiply even after the wound is filled in. Thus keloids project above the surface of the skin and form large tumbles of scar tissue. Keloids are more common in African-Americans. They are seen most commonly on the shoulders, upper back and chest, but they can arise anywhere. When a keloid is related with a skin incision or injury, the keloid scar tissue persists to grow for a time after the original wound has closed, becoming larger and more visible until it reaches a final size. They usually develop between 10 and 30 years of age and affect both sexes evenly, though they may be more frequent among young women with pierced ears. Keloids may form over the breastbone in people who have had open heart surgery. Here you find all terms related to Keloids, like symptoms, causes and effective treatment.
