What are the causes of Molluscum Contagiosum ?

The cause of the Molluscum Contagiosum is unknown. The main cause of Molluscum Contagiosum is its contaginous ability, person can contract molluscum contagiosum primarily by direct contact, either person-to-person or by shared items, such as clothing, towels, and washcloths. MC can be spread by touching the rash and then another part of the body. It is an infection caused by a virus called poxvirus. The infection can effectuate from direct contact, including sexual contact, or by indirect contact, such as sharing towels, or from swimming pools.

What are the symptoms of Molluscum Contagiosum ?

Follwoing are the symptoms of Molluscum Contagiosum :

  • Pink, pearl-like spots on the face, arms and legs, which can be 1 to 5mm in diameter.
  • If the infection is sexually transmitted , the molluscum can be noticed on the genitals, thighs and the lower part of the stomach
  • The rash only rarely involves the mouth, palms, or soles.
  • The rash usually causes no itching or tenderness. 
  • Lesions may be located on any area of the skin and on mucous membranes.
