What is Seborrheic Dermatitis ?

Seborrheic Dermatitis is a very common type of skin disorders but is very dangerous also. Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic, recurring scaly rash including the face, ears, eyebrows, scalp, and occasionally the chest. Scalp seborrhea differs from mild dandruff to dense, diffuse, adherent scale. Facial and trunk seborrhea is distinguished by powdery or greasy scale in skin folds and along hair margins. When seborrheic dermatitis occurs in the neonatal period, it usually vanishes by six to 12 months of age, propounding that it may be a response to maternal hormone stimulation.

Seborrheic dermatitis can also affect the skin on other parts of the body, such as the face and chest, and the creases of the arms, legs and groin. Seborrheic dermatitis generally causes the skin to look a little greasy and scaly or flaky. Lipophilic yeasts of the Malassezia genus, as well as genetic, environmental and general health factors, bestow to this disorder.

What are the causes of Seborrheic Dermatitis ?

The cause of the Seborrheic Dermatitis is yeast named Malassezia ovalis.

What are the symptoms of Seborrheic Dermatitis ?

Treatment of Seborrheic Dermatitis

Following are the treatment of Seborrheic Dermatitis

  • Topical corticosteroids like ketoconazole, naftifine, or ciclopirox creams and gels. Other options include calcineurin inhibitors (ie, pimecrolimus, tacrolimus), sulfur or sulfonamide combinations, or propylene glycol.
  • Shampoos containing salicylic acid, tar, selenium, sulfur, or zinc are helpful. When regular shampoos fail, OTC dandruff shampoos may succeed
  • The use of ketoconazole cream in this anatomical region is controversial.
