What is Xanthomas ?

Xanthomas is a very common type of skin disorders but is very dangerous also. Xanthomas are made of cholesterol deposits. Sometimes xanthomas can occur suddenly on other areas of the body.  These are called eruptive xanthomas and are a sign that blood fat levels are too high.

What are the causes of Xanthomas ?

The cause of the Xanthomas is unknown. Eruptive xanthomas are caused by elevated blood triglyceride levels.

Symptoms of Xanthomas

There are various types of xanthomas as discussed earlier. They may differ in signs and symptoms too, some of the most common type of symptoms are as follows:

  • Skin lesion or bumps under the skin which are flat surface and soft to the touch and yellow in color and have sharply defined margins (sharp, distinct borders)
  • Lesions arise symmetrically on upper and lower eyelids
  • Lesions are soft, velvety, yellow, flat papules or plaques
  • Lesions can join together to form multilobated masses
  • Lesions may be tender and usually itchy
  • The small bumps may join together to form sheets of thickened skin.
